Collie Eye Anomaly (CEA), commonly known as "Collie Eye", is a genetic disease which causes improper development of the eye and possible blindness, is a common ailment in the breed. More rarely, Collies can be affected by Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), another genetic disease in which bilateral degeneration of the retina results in progressive vision loss culminating in blindness. Collie Eye is the biggest health issue of collies. If collie eye is severe enough, the collie can go blind. Tests be done to insure we are breeding to produce puppies that won't go blind from CEA. With doing DNA testing on the parents, we can mate our collies so that the offspring will not have collie eye.
Highland Collies strive to produce only normal eyes. And more over, producing non carriers is our optimal goal. Here is a genetic chart for breeding.
